  • …an amusing papagraph in Paul Theroux “The Happy Isles of Oceania” comes to mind, where he paddled the Easter Island west coast in heavy swell with Bob Dylan in his ears – admiring the big waves breaking against cliffs and caves and whitening the coast with foam and spray. When he took off the headphones he suddely became aware of the immense roar of waves and screaming wind and got so terrified that it took all his concentration and skills to fight his way back to the beach. So beware of iPods in kayaks (and read the book – it is a charmning tale from one of the masters of travel books!)…
