Modified Great Auk progress
Today, I just sanded down the second fill coat on the deck. It was applied yesterday and I used about 4 ounces of epoxy to cover the entire deck. Pictures before today’s sanding. I sanded about half of that 4 oz off and cleaned the deck then I will use a tack cloth on it and apply another 4 ounce batch. Once I get the final fill coat on the deck, I can cut the hatch holes and make the flanges. Here’s how I did it on the Guillemot. Not shown is the molding process. I used 6 oz fiberglass cloth, (7 layers) and formed them around the hatch. The hatch was taped in place and a vinal sheet was stuck down to the inside of the deck to keep things from sticking together. After the glass was wetted and layed in, I covered the whole thing with sheet lastic and put wet sand on top of that to press it all down. Still got a few bubles, but also a very strong and light hatch rim. I used a cutout piece of cardboard for the gasket flange area.
More updates to follow!
Happy building and kayaking to all..

Hello,
I am building this kayak and now I am preparing it to fiberglas it. But I have a problem and is the amount of expoxy I need to coat it. The Epoxy resin cost U$S 32 a litre and is too much for me; I am working with pices of wood and testing polyester resin (US$ 4 / Lt) but it not conviced me the results. so I ask you just this; how much epoxy you need to cover all the kayak
thank you , and congratulation for your job.

Mario,
Good to hear from Montevideo area!
Polyester is not very good for building a kayak. It never gets completely waterproof.
I allotted 1.5 gallons of Epoxy. I don’t plan to use this much, but wanted to be sure I had enough. This was (aproximadamente) 4 liters of resin and 2 liters of hardener. Your costs for the resin seems pretty high. I use Raka eopxy and the 6 quarts (slightly less than 6 liters,) is US$ 87.
Here’s a link, but don’t know if they ship internationally..

I like this epoxy, it is easy to use and has no “blush” to contend with. I put it on as thin as I can so as not to use very much. The more epoxy you use, the heavier your kayak will be.
You might try this site for some information. It is mostly skin on frame, but Marcel may have some ideas on epoxy in your area.
