Fill coat done on the coaming

Got the fill coat done on the coaming, starting to look like something now.

After this sets up, I’m flipping the deck over and will be building the flanges for the hatches. This will be a 7 layer layup of 6 ounce glass with a spacer to allow room for the gasket material on final assembly.

  • Tony,

That has got to be the best looking strip coaming I’ve ever seen, or the whole boat for that matter. How did you make the coaming, and how many hours do you have in the boat ?

    Regards,

    Tom

  • Thanks Tom!
the recess is stripped and aimed back to a ‘focal’ point at about the center of the seat. I used a string to figure out the taper needed to make that happen:

Hover your cursor over the square in the picture for a short blurb about what it is showing.
The coaming took about a week at about 5 hours a day, so I’d guess 35 to 40 hours. As far as the whole kayak…. I don’t really know. My first picture of the first stripping was taken on July 25, but I went on vacation for a month since then and also was working out of town for 5 weeks, and bugged out for Hurricane Rita for a week so 6 months minus about 10 weeks gets me to 3.5 months total on it .. or so. Probably minus another week to 10 days when I had rental properties to work on. So, not all that much time compared to some, and a lot of time compared to others..
I got some ideas on that stripper Sea Ranger too, but am going to tone it down a bit on that one. Not get too fancy but still have some decorative strips in it. Gotta have something to think about when doing all that hand sanding :)
    Take care..
