Had to get the Great Auk out on the grass to check to see if we fit.. Yep! I’d hate to get to the Symposium tomorrow and not be able to get in it.. :)

Putting on the extras..

Monday, March 27th, 2006

Forgot how long all these picky little details take, but am making headway on rigging the Great Auik. Here is a picture of the foot pegs. For more pictures, click here or on the picture.

I’m trying to get the kayak ready for Saturday, to take it to the First Annual Texas Gulf Coast Sea Kayak Symposium.

See ya there!

Varnish!!

Saturday, March 11th, 2006

Finally got the first coat of varnish on the deck. actually, 2 coats separated by about 2 hours. I’m using a varnish I get at Wal-mart. It is by Minwax and is really a urethane.  It’s called Helmsman Spar Urethane, and has UV protection. Not real easy to apply, but got plenty of tips from the fine folks at the Kayak building bulletin board when I built my first kayak anyway.
Here’s a picture and you can click on it to get to all the rest of them..

End pour of the modified Great Auk

Friday, March 10th, 2006

Doing the end pour today, it is mostly minicell foam so it won’t add too much weight to the boat. The boat has been sanded to 220 grit and is very close to being ready for varnish.

Take care..

How long does a strip built kayak take to build?

Friday, March 10th, 2006

Bryan Hansel has kept track of his hours on his last build. You can see the summary of times or, better yet, go to the first page of the log and read the whole thing. Good read with a ton of information helpful to all would-be builders as well as veterans alike.
Great looking boat Bryan!
