Varnish!!

Finally got the first coat of varnish on the deck. actually, 2 coats separated by about 2 hours. I’m using a varnish I get at Wal-mart. It is by Minwax and is really a urethane.  It’s called Helmsman Spar Urethane, and has UV protection. Not real easy to apply, but got plenty of tips from the fine folks at the Kayak building bulletin board when I built my first kayak anyway.
Here’s a picture and you can click on it to get to all the rest of them..

  • Looking good! I used Helmsman on my last kayak and my cross country skis and wooden snowsnoes. It seems to be very durable. Good stuff and cheap. Do they give an UV index or anything to compare it to other spar varnishes? Do you know?

  • Thanks!
The varnish just says “exceptional protection against Sun, Rain and moisture, and temperature changes” Doesn’t give any quantatative data on any of that.
Still looking good after a year on my Guillemot though. (Except for where I scratched it on oyster beds)
